Over 1,000 Drivers Caught in Garda National Slow Down Day as Christmas Crackdown Continues

The 24-hour National Slow Down operation recorded over 1,000 speeders during intensified holiday enforcement.

Overview

  • An Garda Síochána says 1,038 drivers were detected speeding on December 23, with 377 intercepted during the 24-hour operation.
  • Extreme cases included 139 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, and 168 km/h in a 100 km/h zone near Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.
  • The Christmas road-safety campaign, running December 1 to January 5, previously logged nearly 5,400 speeding detections in the week of December 15–21.
  • Garda activity in that week also included over 2,021 checkpoints, more than 650 vehicle seizures, and hundreds of fixed-charge notices for phone and seatbelt offences.
  • Authorities report a year-to-date rise in road deaths, cited at 184–186 versus 172 last year, as Gardaí urge drivers to slow down, avoid drink and drug driving, and take extra care during heavy holiday travel.
