Over 100 Exotic Animals Seized From Posadas Veterinary Clinic After Raid Over Cruelty and Illegal Trade

Prosecutors are pursuing charges under Argentina's animal-cruelty and wildlife laws, with environmental agencies managing court-ordered care.

Overview

  • Gendarmerie investigators raided Veterinaria Amazonas on Colón Street in Posadas under Laws 14.346 and 22.421 following complaints of abuse and illegal commercialization.
  • Officers found titi monkeys, overo lizards, snakes, aquatic turtles, iguanas, bearded dragons and even a yacaré in dehydrated, unsanitary captivity.
  • Authorities also discovered 14 dead animals stored in a freezer and seized a reptile incubator along with a rat-breeding setup used for snake feed.
  • The Juzgado de Instrucción de la Primera Circunscripción Judicial placed the reptiles and mammals under protective custody and coordinated transfers with provincial environmental units.
  • Legal responsibility of clinic staff remains under investigation, and rescuer Fernando Piesco alleges some specimens are still with the same caretaker despite judicial oversight.
