Over 100 Civilians Killed in Sudan Market Airstrike

The 20-month conflict between Sudan's army and RSF escalates with deadly attacks on civilian areas, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis.

  • An airstrike on a market in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, killed over 100 people and injured hundreds more, including women and children, according to rights groups.
  • The Sudanese army denied responsibility for the attack, claiming it only targets Rapid Support Forces (RSF) military positions, which it alleges are embedded in civilian areas.
  • On Tuesday, RSF artillery struck an army-controlled area in Omdurman, killing at least 65 people, including 22 passengers on a bus hit by a shell.
  • The ongoing war, which began in April 2023, has displaced 12 million people, killed tens of thousands, and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with famine declared in parts of North Darfur.
  • Human Rights Watch and other organizations have called for urgent international intervention to protect civilians as both sides face accusations of war crimes, including indiscriminate attacks on populated areas.
