Ovechkin Scores 887th Career Goal, Closing in on Gretzky’s NHL Record

The Capitals captain is now just eight goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record of 894.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 887th career goal in the Capitals' 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks, moving him within eight goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL record.
Ovechkin's goal came off a deflection in the third period, marking his 34th goal of the season despite missing 16 games earlier due to injury.
The 39-year-old Russian star has now scored against an NHL-record 182 different goalies during his career.
Ovechkin also contributed an assist, helping the Capitals secure their sixth win in seven games and maintain their lead in the Eastern Conference.
He is projected to potentially break Gretzky's record by the end of the regular season, with April 13 against Columbus being a possible milestone date.
