Ovechkin Day-to-Day, Skips Hershey as Capitals Target Two Preseason Appearances

Coach Spencer Carbery aims to give the Capitals’ captain two preseason tune-ups pending medical clearance from head trainer Jason Serbus.

Carbery confirmed Ovechkin will not travel to Hershey for Thursday’s preseason game against the Flyers.
The captain has skated on consecutive mornings in a no-contact jersey and has not rejoined full-team drills since leaving the first day of camp.
Carbery said the goal is to play him in two exhibition games—one road and one home—before the Oct. 8 opener, subject to progress.
Only four preseason dates remain: at the Devils on Sept. 28, at the Blue Jackets on Sept. 30, then home vs. the Bruins on Oct. 2 and the Blue Jackets on Oct. 4.
Prospect Alexander Suzdalev also skated in a no-contact jersey during his recovery, and veteran Nic Dowd is away for personal reasons.
