Strickland, a conservative critic of Pope Francis, was asked not to attend the meeting by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Pope Francis' diplomatic representative to the United States.
Strickland's supporters expressed concerns about the direction of the church under Pope Francis, including his focus on climate change and his moves to welcome LGBTQ+ Catholics.
