OU, OK and Star-K to Require Kosher Certification for All Beer at Supervised Venues Starting Jan. 1, 2026

The agencies cite modern brewing methods and additives that can compromise kashrus as the reason for tightening standards.

Overview

  • The Orthodox Union announced the move in coordination with OK Kosher, Star-K and several local supervision agencies to create a uniform standard.
  • A partial list covering nearly 1,000 already certified beers has been distributed to mashgichim and food-service operators to guide purchasing.
  • Many major national-brand beers with existing kosher oversight will remain acceptable even without a printed symbol on the label.
  • All craft beers will need a visible kosher symbol or written confirmation of valid certification under the new policy.
  • Caterers, venues and mashgichim are being urged to consult OU Kashrus in advance of events, with the agencies pledging support for a smooth transition.
