Overview
- Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce in Edmonton an initial slate featuring LNG Canada’s Kitimat Phase 2, a small modular reactor at Darlington, the Port of Montreal’s Contrecoeur expansion, Saskatchewan’s Foran McIlvenna Bay mine, and a Red Chris copper expansion in B.C.
- Carney said a subsequent list will be revealed by the Nov. 16 Grey Cup as the government rolls out its expedited approvals program.
- The initial selection contains no new oil pipelines, though Alberta has pressed for one and an earlier draft list had contemplated a route to the Pacific Coast.
- A draft federal release says the Kitimat Phase 2 project would double Canada’s LNG production and create a pathway for other LNG proposals.
- Projects flagged for further development include upgrades to the Port of Churchill, a Toronto–Québec City high-speed rail line, a 50‑gigawatt wind build in Nova Scotia, an Alberta carbon capture project, and northern all‑weather roads.
