Ottawa Details Remembrance Day Closures, Detours and Ceremony Times for Nov. 11

City rules keep the morning clear for ceremonies by delaying most retail openings until 12:30 p.m.

Overview

  • Most retail in Ottawa must remain closed until 12:30 p.m. under the city’s by-law, with exemptions for small groceries and specialty shops, smaller pharmacies, outdoor market vendors, gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants and certain repair and garden businesses.
  • Elgin, Wellington, Metcalfe, Queen and Queen Elizabeth Driveway will be closed downtown from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with additional rolling closures across the core between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • OC Transpo will run a largely normal schedule with detours for closures, pause all buses and trains at 11 a.m. for two minutes of silence, and offer free rides to veterans and companions from November 5 to 11.
  • LCBO and The Beer Store locations in Ottawa will open at 12:30 p.m., while Gatineau’s SAQ and many Quebec retailers will operate on their usual hours.
  • Canada Post will not collect or deliver mail and corporate post offices will be closed, many municipal counters and libraries will be closed, banks and federal/provincial service centres will be closed, schools will operate normally, and the national ceremony at the War Memorial is scheduled to begin around 10:30 a.m. with flyovers at 11:05 a.m.
