Ottawa Deploys Specialized Military Team to Pimicikamak After Power Outage Crisis

Thousands remain displaced, with damage to more than 1,300 homes still being assessed.

Overview

  • Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski announced Friday that a Canadian Armed Forces team will be sent to Pimicikamak Cree Nation.
  • The unit will deliver targeted assessment and advisory support on water treatment, sewage systems, power generation, project management and logistics.
  • A days-long outage triggered frozen pipes and sewage backups, forcing the evacuation of at least 4,000 residents and damaging hundreds of homes.
  • Chief David Monias said the extent of housing damage remains unclear nearly two weeks on, with many holding tanks and water lines still frozen and testing to follow thawing.
  • Additional heaters are expected Monday with 30 more tradespeople to aid repairs, as Ottawa pledges support and Manitoba’s premier asks Manitoba Hydro to review its response and consider relocating the power line.
