Ottawa and B.C. Commit $84 Million to Connect Nearly 7,700 Rural Households in British Columbia

Funding will enable CityWest, TELUS to extend fibre, mobile coverage across rural communities to boost B.C.’s connectivity rate

Overview

  • Fifteen federally and provincially funded broadband projects worth $77 million will bring high-speed Internet to over 6,900 households, including more than 1,200 Indigenous homes.
  • An additional $7 million will support three projects in Spallumcheen (Splatsin First Nation) and Hullcar to connect 727 households and provide cellular service along 120 km of roadway.
  • These investments are part of the 2022 Connecting Communities BC partnership under the Universal Broadband Fund, raising total funding in the latest round to over $84 million.
  • CityWest Cable & Telephone and TELUS Communications will build fibre-to-the-home and wireless networks across more than 100 rural and remote communities.
  • British Columbia’s household connectivity rate stands at 95.8 percent and is forecast to reach 97.8 percent next year, advancing Canada’s target of 100 percent broadband access by 2030.
