Oscars 2026 Eligibility List Puts Five Indian Films in Best Picture Contention

The Academy’s newly released eligibility roll lists 201 Best Picture contenders, with several Indian titles meeting expanded theatrical and inclusion standards.

Overview

  • AMPAS named 201 features eligible for Best Picture from 317 overall, including Kantara: Chapter 1, Tanvi The Great, Mahavatar Narsimha, Tourist Family and Sister Midnight from India.
  • Hombale Films said it submitted Kantara: Chapter 1 and Mahavatar Narsimha via the Academy’s general entry route for consideration across multiple categories.
  • Best Picture eligibility required a qualifying theatrical run, completion of the confidential RAISE form and meeting at least two of the Academy’s inclusion standards.
  • Films also needed a seven-day engagement in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets within 45 days of initial 2025 release, per the Academy’s expanded theatrical criteria.
  • Inclusion on the reminder list is not a nomination, with final Oscar nominees due January 22 as India’s official entry Homebound already sits on the International Feature shortlist of 15.
