Oscar Pistorius Granted Second Parole Hearing

Former Olympic runner's parole eligibility reevaluated after court error in sentence calculation

Oscar Pistorius, the former Paralympian and Olympic runner, will have a second chance at parole on Friday.
Pistorius has been in prison since late 2014 for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
His initial conviction of culpable homicide was upgraded to murder after a series of appeals by prosecutors.
The Supreme Court of Appeal made an error in calculating his sentence, ruling him ineligible for parole until August 2024, when he was in fact eligible in March.
The decision to give Pistorius another parole hearing is effectively an admission of the appeal court’s error.
