Osaka–Kansai Expo Projects ¥23–¥28 Billion Operating Surplus

Stronger ticket demand plus brisk Myaku-Myaku goods sales lifted revenue beyond plan.

  • The Japan Association for the World Expo reported at an Oct. 7 board meeting that operations are now forecast to finish ¥23–¥28 billion in the black on a ¥116 billion budget.
  • Actual revenue is expected to exceed the plan by about ¥23 billion, while expenses could come in up to ¥5 billion lower than projected.
  • Ticket sales reached about 22.07 million by Oct. 3, well above the 18 million breakeven level, and total attendance had surpassed 23 million by Oct. 4.
  • Sales of official character merchandise and related royalties boosted income, with ticket revenue projected about ¥20 billion above plan and other income roughly ¥3 billion higher.
  • The board confirmed a policy to preserve part of the venue’s large roof ring and discussed covering maintenance and careful dismantling from the site development contingency fund, while the use of any surplus remains undecided.
