Orphaned Mountain Lion Cubs Released in San Diego County After Months of Rehabilitation

A months-long rehabilitation program at the Ramona Wildlife Center prepared two orphaned mountain lions for release in San Diego County.

Overview

  • The pair was released on Sept. 18 into suitable habitat in San Diego County after more than five months of care.
  • They were found alone and malnourished near Poway in March and were safely trapped by UC DavisCalifornia Carnivores Program with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
  • The cubs were transferred to San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center on March 26 for veterinary treatment and rehabilitation with minimal human contact.
  • Staff emphasized hunting skills and human wariness, and each young male was microchipped, tagged and fitted with a tracking collar before release.
  • San Diego Humane Society described the outcome as a conservation success, noting Project Wildlife treats more than 10,000 wild animals annually.
