Orlando International Puts First Upgraded Gate Link Tram Into Service

The new tram adds platform screen doors and modern control and power systems to boost capacity and reliability before crews complete the parallel track, then move the work to Gates 70–99.

Overview

  • The first of four new Gate Link tram sets is now carrying passengers to Gates 100–129 with each set able to hold up to 240 people.
  • The upgrade replaced running surfaces and added new vehicles, power distribution, vehicle controls, communications and platform screen doors on the completed track.
  • Airport crews are using a phased approach that keeps one renovated track in service while they refurbish the second parallel track at Gates 100–129, then will relocate work to Gates 70–99.
  • The Gate Link Replacement is a $253 million component of Orlando’s $6.9 billion Capital Improvement Program and marks the project’s first major service milestone.
  • Passengers should see fewer interruptions and faster, safer connections because platform doors reduce track intrusions and the new systems aim to improve reliability while the multi-phase work continues.
