Orlando Airport to Start Gate Tram Replacement on Dec. 3, Reducing Airside 2 Service

The phased $253 million project will swap out decades-old trains for higher‑capacity Mitsubishi models, with officials warning of longer waits during the holiday peak.

Overview

  • Beginning Dec. 3, only one tram will operate at Airside 2 (Gates 100–129), first affecting many Southwest travelers.
  • Both trams will close overnight from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., requiring shuttle-bus transfers between airsides to reach the main terminal.
  • GOAA is adding Cobus shuttles, clear signage, and 84 guest-services staff and ambassadors to manage queues and assist passengers.
  • After Airside 2, work moves to Airside 4 (Gates 70–99) used by United, Delta, American, Frontier, Spirit and several international carriers, with phased operations continuing.
  • The program runs through fall 2027 and replaces four aging trams with Mitsubishi Gate Link vehicles holding about 240 passengers, and officials advise extra time, including 30 minutes for rental car or rideshare pickup.
