Overview

  • Baltimore placed Rutschman on the injured list retroactive to Aug. 18 after he felt right-side soreness during pregame batting work in Boston.
  • This is his second oblique-related IL stint of 2025 after a left-side strain sidelined him from June 20 to July 28.
  • Interim manager Tony Mansolino called the strain low grade and very mild but declined to set a return timetable.
  • Basallo moves into the starting catcher role with Alex Jackson serving as the backup, and the club recalled outfielder Daniel Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk to fill the roster spot.
  • With Rutschman struggling at the plate this year (.227 average, .683 OPS) and Basallo off to a solid start (3-for-10 in his first three games), some analysts have floated offseason trade scenarios as speculation.
