Original Saugus Cafe to Close Jan. 4, Ending Nearly 140 Years in Los Angeles County

The owners issued a farewell message without explaining the decision.

Overview

  • The Santa Clarita diner announced on Facebook that its final day of service will be Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.
  • Founded in 1886 beside the Saugus train station, it is widely regarded as the county’s oldest continuously operating restaurant.
  • The farewell thanked patrons and said the choice was not made lightly, and calls to the restaurant seeking a reason went unanswered.
  • Located at 25861 Railroad Ave., the cafe became a filming staple that reportedly served presidents and early Hollywood figures including Theodore Roosevelt, Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin.
  • The future use of the building is unknown, as the closure coincides with instability for other local landmarks such as Cole’s French Dip and a planned revival of The Pantry under new ownership.
