oriGIn Opens Latin America Office at Tequila Regulator in Jalisco

The regional Antena will coordinate legal protection, technical rules and financing to help origin-linked products scale abroad.

Overview

  • The oriGIn Antena for Latin America opened at the Consejo Regulador del Tequila in Guadalajara Thursday and the IMPI granted Indicación Geográfica status to Mármol de Vizarrón of Querétaro during the event.
  • oriGIn issued membership certificates to Paraguay’s and Peru’s IP offices and signed a memorandum of understanding with Colombia’s Superintendencia to deepen regional cooperation.
  • Speakers at the seminar urged a single regulatory council for each Denominación de Origen and stronger conformity-assessment rules to prevent multiple certifications from confusing buyers in export markets.
  • Organizers said the office will offer technical assistance, push expanded Normas Oficiales Mexicanas where needed, and promote financing channels aimed at raising value for producer communities using the tequila model as an example.
  • Officials noted Mexico now has 19 Denominaciones de Origen and 41 Indicaciones Geográficas, and argued stronger institutional capacity and testing infrastructure are required for these protections to deliver wider economic gains for thousands of producers.
