OriGIn Establishes Latin America Antenna at Tequila Regulator Headquarters

The new liaison hub is designed to bolster GI protection, compliance, market access across Latin America.

Overview

  • The regional office will be housed at the Consejo Regulador del Tequila building in Zapopan, Jalisco, serving as a liaison for countries across the region.
  • The installation agreement was signed during the oriGIn Bienal 2025 in Morelia with participation from Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, OriGIn president Riccardo Deserti, IMPI director Santiago Nieto, and CRT president Aurelio López Rocha.
  • Alfredo Rendón Algara, former director general of Mexico’s IMPI, was appointed to lead the Antena Regional.
  • CRT described the initiative as a two-way bridge to strengthen governance of geographic indications and to provide services on defense, compliance, and market access for Latin American producers as well as counterparts in Europe and other regions.
  • At the inauguration, IMPI granted recognition to five new Michoacán geographic indications: Molcajetes de San Nicolás Obispo, Esferas de Tlalpujahua, Jamaica de La Huacana, Pescado Blanco del Lago de Pátzcuaro, and Guayaba del Oriente.
