Surrey Police say the case shows how criminals’ own home-security footage can be repurposed by investigators to dismantle organised burglary rings.

Overview

  • Terence O’Reilly, 23, and James Carthy, 33, received eight- and six-year prison sentences respectively at Guildford Crown Court in July 2025 for nine burglaries, three attempted burglaries and a vehicle theft between August and October 2024.
  • Court documents revealed the pair used Ring doorbell and home-security camera footage to lift letterboxes, test door handles and confirm unoccupied homes before breaking in.
  • The offenders were tracked through CCTV footage of a modified silver Audi S3, which led to a police chase in Hascombe on October 2 and their capture after they abandoned the car and discarded designer bags and jewellery.
  • A search of the abandoned Audi uncovered baseball caps, a crowbar, chisel, pickaxe and surgical masks that linked the suspects to the crimes and strengthened the prosecution’s case.
  • Both men were placed under Serious Crime Prevention Orders to restrict their activities after release, and Surrey Police hailed the investigation as a model for using consumer surveillance and vehicle identification to tackle organised property crime.
