Oregon Man Charged After Deputies Find Makeshift Home in Condo Crawl Space

A witness tip, coupled with reports of strange noises, prompted deputies to force open a locked, damaged door to the hidden space.

Overview

  • Deputies responded to a condo complex near Happy Valley just before 11 p.m. on Sept. 3 after a caller reported an unknown man and light coming from a crawl space.
  • An extension cord was seen running through a vent, the crawl-space door was damaged and locked, and the owner said no one should be inside or using power there.
  • Inside, deputies found Beniamin Bucur, 40, along with a bed, lights, televisions, chargers, and other electronics connected to the unit’s electricity.
  • A pipe with white residue tested positive for methamphetamine, and deputies said the setup indicated he had been living there for an extended period.
  • Bucur was booked into Clackamas County Jail on charges of first-degree burglary and unlawful possession of methamphetamine, with bail set at $75,000 during a preliminary hearing; the sheriff’s office is seeking tips, and local records reporting notes prior convictions.
