Oregon Judge Halts Guard Deployments as Illinois and Chicago Sue to Block Chicago Troops

Fresh court challenges put the president’s authority to federalize the Guard for domestic law enforcement under scrutiny.

Overview

  • U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut issued a temporary restraining order blocking any National Guard deployment to Oregon and broadened it after the administration sought to reroute federalized troops from California and Texas.
  • Illinois and the City of Chicago filed a federal lawsuit to stop a planned deployment of hundreds of Guard troops, following Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s disclosure that about 300 Illinois Guard members and roughly 400 from Texas were being readied.
  • The White House confirmed President Trump authorized using Illinois Guard personnel for a crime-and-immigration crackdown, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he approved sending his state’s Guard.
  • In Chicago, DHS acknowledged agents shot a woman after Border Patrol vehicles were rammed and boxed in, and federal officials reported 13 arrests near an ICE facility in Broadview.
  • Plaintiffs cite a September ruling that found the Los Angeles deployment unlawful, and the Oregon and Illinois cases are advancing quickly with further hearings expected, with some reports indicating an Illinois judge allowed the deployment to proceed for now.
