Oregon Health Care Worker Flu Vaccination Drops to 54%, State Warns of Patient Risk

OHA urges employer-led steps using a new toolkit to raise coverage toward the 90% benchmark.

Overview

  • Coverage fell 11% from 2023–24 and 36% since 2019–20, affecting nearly 150,000 eligible workers statewide.
  • Vaccination rates varied widely by setting: ambulatory surgery centers 61%, hospitals 60%, dialysis centers 50%, and nursing and inpatient psychiatric facilities 30%.
  • During 2024–25, 18% of eligible workers declined vaccination and 28% were recorded with unknown status, up from 21% the prior year.
  • Dialysis centers and inpatient psychiatric facilities were the only categories with year-over-year gains, with dialysis centers rising steadily from 27% in 2021–22.
  • Reaching the 90% goal would require 53,260 additional vaccinations, with OHA warning that low uptake endangers high-risk patients and can strain staffing.
