• Local resident Joshua Lepin filmed the pod as friends floated off Gambier Island on Saturday afternoon.
• He estimated six or seven orcas, with video showing fin and tail slaps and juveniles porpoising.
• Lepin said the vessels were stationary with engines off, which he believes led the whales to approach.
• Swimmers left the water as the whales passed, and the close pass lasted about 10 minutes.
• Fisheries guidance requires keeping 400 metres from orcas in Howe Sound and staying out of gear if whales enter that zone.
