Orange County Woman Charged With 5 Felonies for Allegedly Registering Dog to Vote

Prosecutors attribute the counted 2021 ballot to looser state rules, later calling the 2022 attempt invalid under first-time federal voter checks.

Overview

  • Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, faces charges including perjury, registering a non-existent person to vote, offering a false document, and two counts of casting a ballot when not entitled to vote.
  • Prosecutors say a ballot submitted in the name “Maya Jean Yourex” was counted in the 2021 gubernatorial recall, while a 2022 primary ballot was flagged and rejected.
  • Yourex is scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 9 at the Stephen K. Tamura West Justice Center in Westminster, California.
  • The District Attorney’s Office says the case began after Yourex self-reported to the Orange County Registrar of Voters in October 2024, with investigators also citing social-media posts from January 2022 and October 2024.
  • If convicted on all counts, Yourex faces up to six years in state prison, and officials note the 2021 recall result—rejected by 61.9% of voters—was unaffected.
