Orange Alerts Persist in Southern Brazil as Cold Front Trails Offshore Cyclone

With the cyclone now over the Atlantic, a trailing front is driving heavy rain and strong winds that keep severe-weather warnings active from the South into parts of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Overview

  • Brazil’s meteorology agency maintains a danger-level alert until 10 a.m. Monday for Paraná, Santa Catarina and parts of Rio Grande do Sul, extending to Mato Grosso do Sul and portions of São Paulo, with 30–60 mm/h rain, 50–100 mm/day totals, winds of 60–100 km/h and possible hail.
  • The extratropical cyclone that formed near Argentina over the weekend has shifted over the ocean, but the associated cold front continues to spark storms across the South, Southeast and Center-West.
  • Authorities warn of outages, flooding, crop losses and falling trees and urge people to avoid sheltering under trees, steer clear of power lines, secure loose objects and contact Civil Defense (199) or Fire Department (193) in emergencies.
  • Localized impacts have already been reported, including hail in western São Paulo on Saturday and disruptions in the Federal District on Sunday with flooding, hail and slick roads.
  • Coastal São Paulo faces moderate to strong gusts through Tuesday, with state guidance to postpone nautical activities and reinforce roofs, awnings and other structures vulnerable to wind.
