Orange Alert in Tamil Nadu as Bay System Brings Heavy Rain, Chennai Schools Shut

Officials blame a strengthening Bay of Bengal low-pressure system for the severe weather alerts.

Overview

  • IMD placed Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Karaikal under an orange alert for the likelihood of very heavy rain.
  • The weather system remains over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lanka coast with an associated upper-air cyclonic circulation and a west-northwest track forecast.
  • District collectors announced school closures for November 17 in Chennai and several nearby districts due to overnight downpours and waterlogging.
  • City and state agencies prepared pumps and monitoring teams, while advisories urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and warned fishermen to stay off rough seas with squally winds of 35–45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph.
  • Forecasters expect heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Tamil Nadu over the next several days, with related warnings also issued for Puducherry, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
