Orange Alert in Liguria After Floods and Downburst Hit Genoa

Saturated soils after exceptional rain have heightened hydrogeological risk across Liguria.

Overview

  • Italy’s Civil Protection issued an adverse weather advisory, with orange alerts for thunderstorms in Liguria and for hydraulic and hydrogeological risk on sectors of Emilia-Romagna on Sunday.
  • Genoa’s west side saw severe damage from intense rain and a sea-born downburst, including the overflow of the Fegino stream, a collapsed retaining wall in Pegli, overturned vehicles, blown containers at Prà and airport disruptions.
  • Firefighters reported 252 interventions across Liguria on Saturday—about half in the Genoa area—with further overnight callouts to clear fallen trees and address power outages.
  • ARPAL measured exceptional rainfall totals and widespread saturation of soils, citing cumulative peaks such as 204 mm at Genova Fiumara, 180 mm at Pegli and 162 mm at Pontedecimo.
  • Forecasts call for additional Atlantic disturbances through midweek and, from around 20 November, an Arctic‑maritime air intrusion likely to drive a sharp temperature drop and potentially bring low‑elevation snow.
