Orange Alert for Mumbai as Heavy Rains Flood Roads and Shut Andheri Subway

Overview

  • IMD upgraded a yellow alert to orange at 4 pm Friday for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, valid until 8:30 am Saturday, with no alert issued beyond that window.
  • Waterlogging and slow traffic were reported across Kurla, BKC, Juhu and Andheri, and the Andheri Subway was closed after 2–2.5 feet of water forced diversions via the Gokhale Bridge.
  • Official gauges recorded sharp bursts: Santacruz logged 77 mm by 5:30 pm and Colaba 32.2 mm, while BMC measured 61 mm in the western suburbs between 8:30 am and 6 pm.
  • IMD officials attributed the surge to a mid- and upper-level cyclonic circulation over Vidarbha moving northwest, which enhanced rainfall over the Konkan belt.
  • A woman died in a retaining wall collapse at Sakinaka as IMD also warned of heavy to very heavy rain over parts of Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, the Gujarat Region, Kerala and Coastal Karnataka, advising fishermen to stay ashore.
