OPSEU Sends Settlement Proposal as Ontario College Support Strike Enters Week Four

The provincial negotiator is reviewing the union package ahead of an Oct. 14–17 strike vote by part-time staff.

Overview

  • More than 10,000 full-time support workers at 24 public colleges have been on strike since Sept. 11, with no new bargaining dates set since mediation ended Sept. 29.
  • OPSEU says it delivered a comprehensive settlement package and invited the employer back to the table; the College Employer Council confirms receipt and says it is reviewing the proposal.
  • Roughly 10,000 part-time support staff will hold a strike vote Oct. 14–17, and colleges are urging employees to vote no, warning that strike votes can lead to strikes.
  • The council says its offer includes 2% annual wage increases, six per cent vacation pay and two paid sick days for permanent regular part-time staff, while the union seeks paid sick days for all part-time workers, cancelled-shift pay, higher wages and retroactive pay.
  • Rotating pickets have disrupted campus operations, with accessibility supports reported inaccessible, convocations cancelled and some colleges suspending in-person classes at certain campuses.
