Opposition Bloc Rallies in Chisinau as Poll Shows Neck-and-Neck Race

Street mobilization has become a central opposition tactic before Sunday’s parliamentary vote.

Overview

  • An iData survey conducted September 7–19 (1,059 respondents; ±2.9%) shows the Patriotic electoral bloc at 33.9% and the ruling Action and Solidarity Party at 33.6%, with projected mandates of 41 and 40 respectively, excluding diaspora and Transnistria.
  • The Patriotic bloc staged a central Chisinau march and rally on September 25, which organizers said drew more than 5,000 people, with leaders Igor Dodon, Irina Vlah and Vasile Tarlev calling for free and fair elections and equal voting rights for all citizens.
  • Reporting highlights ongoing allegations of state pressure on opponents, citing criminal cases against opposition figures, the sentencing of Gagauzia’s leader Yevgenia Gutsul, detentions at Chisinau airport, proposed protest restrictions, and earlier closures or blocking of media and online channels.
  • In July, Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission refused to register the Pobeda bloc over documentation violations, and its leader Ilan Shor has urged voters to oust the PDS and President Maia Sandu and to vote against PDS and the Alternative bloc.
  • Parliamentary elections are scheduled for September 28, and the poll’s seat projections do not account for diaspora and Transnistria votes, leaving the overall balance in the next parliament uncertain.
