OPP Charges Boater After Toronto Man’s Death on Weslemkoon Lake

Police have opened an impaired boating operation investigation, seeking tips as weekend marine incidents surge

Overview

  • OPP received a call at about 7:45 a.m. Saturday reporting a passenger who had fallen overboard and not resurfaced on Weslemkoon Lake.
  • After a multi-unit search involving local detachments, the Marine Unit, Aviation Services and the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, the body of a 22-year-old Toronto man was recovered around 8 p.m.
  • Dawson Lowes, 21, of Toronto has been charged with operation causing death, dangerous operation causing death, and impaired operation offences related to alcohol and drugs.
  • The OPP has issued a province-wide marine safety alert following a surge in weekend boating incidents and urged the public to take precautionary measures on the water.
  • Investigators are continuing their probe and have asked anyone with information to contact the Lennox and Addington County OPP or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
