Overview

  • OPM Director Scott Kupor told Reuters that the Department of Government Efficiency "doesn't exist" and is no longer a centralized entity.
  • OPM has assumed many of the unit's functions, while a new National Design Studio led by Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia is tasked with improving federal websites under an August executive order.
  • Kupor said the government-wide hiring freeze associated with DOGE has ended and there is no longer a target for workforce reductions.
  • DOGE claimed tens of billions in savings, but outside experts could not verify the figures because the unit released no detailed public accounting.
  • Prior reports described DOGE’s collapse after a public Musk–Trump split, internal power struggles involving Steve Davis, and staff departures following warnings to "get your own lawyer."
