Ophelia makes landfall on North Carolina coast before weakening; new storm Philippe takes shape in Atlantic

  • Tropical Storm Ophelia formed off the southeast U.S. coast and strengthened to near hurricane-force before making landfall in North Carolina on September 23.
  • Ophelia brought life-threatening storm surges, damaging winds, torrential rain and flooding to parts of the Carolinas, Virginia and Mid-Atlantic.
  • The storm knocked out power to over 70,000 homes and businesses and flooded numerous communities before weakening to a post-tropical cyclone.
  • Ophelia continued north, soaking areas from North Carolina to southern New England and causing additional flooding before dissipating.
  • Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Philippe developed in the Atlantic on September 23 and is tracking west-northwest, not currently posing a threat to land.
