Overview

  • Civil defence exercises took place on May 31 across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh under Operation Shield after being postponed from May 29 for administrative reasons.
  • Scenarios included air raid sirens, simulated drone and missile strikes, controlled blackouts and mass evacuation drills to assess response protocols of local administrations and citizens.
  • The Home Ministry launched the drills to address operational deficiencies identified during a nationwide exercise on May 7, focusing on high-risk districts near the Line of Control and the International Border.
  • Approximately 32,000 volunteers in Haryana took part alongside NCC, NSS and Bharat Scouts & Guides members, while hotlines with the Air Force and inter-agency coordination channels were activated.
  • Mock rescue operations engaged police, fire services, medical teams and civil defence wardens in coordinated responses to wartime emergencies in urban centres and frontline areas.
