Operation Polo at 77: Hyderabad’s Integration and Patel’s Leadership

An AI holobox of Sardar Patel debuts at the Prime Minister’s Museum to commemorate the five-day 1948 campaign.

Overview

  • India’s five-day Operation Polo, conducted from September 13 to 17, 1948, ended the Nizam’s rule and integrated Hyderabad into the Union.
  • Days earlier, New Delhi issued a September 9 ultimatum to disband the Razakars and free political prisoners as militia violence under Qasim Rizvi escalated.
  • The operation was authorised at the top level with Sardar Patel and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, led in the field by Major General J N Chaudhuri, and concluded with the Nizam’s surrender on September 17.
  • Post-surrender, Major General J N Choudhuri became military governor, the Nizam served as Rajpramukh, and ICS officer M K Vellodi managed the transition before elected government took office in 1952.
  • Marking the 77th anniversary, the Culture Ministry announced a life-size AI-powered holobox of Sardar Patel at the Prime Minister’s Museum that lets visitors interact with a hyper-realistic 3D avatar.
