Overview
- India’s five-day Operation Polo, conducted from September 13 to 17, 1948, ended the Nizam’s rule and integrated Hyderabad into the Union.
- Days earlier, New Delhi issued a September 9 ultimatum to disband the Razakars and free political prisoners as militia violence under Qasim Rizvi escalated.
- The operation was authorised at the top level with Sardar Patel and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, led in the field by Major General J N Chaudhuri, and concluded with the Nizam’s surrender on September 17.
- Post-surrender, Major General J N Choudhuri became military governor, the Nizam served as Rajpramukh, and ICS officer M K Vellodi managed the transition before elected government took office in 1952.
