Operation Gears: Teen Arrested After 40mph Illegal E-Bike Pursuit in Croxteth

High-visibility tactics highlight police use of fresh seizure and destruction powers under Operation Gears

Overview

  • On July 23, officers on Stonebridge Lane spotted a 19-year-old riding a modified e-bike at over 40 mph and pursued him after he narrowly missed a pedestrian
  • The rider from Old Swan was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving, failure to stop, driving without a licence and lacking third-party insurance
  • Police drove onto the bike’s rear wheel to force the suspect off and secure his detention before seizing the machine
  • Inspection revealed the e-bike could reach more than 50 mph and had worn tyres, no rear brake and non-functioning pedals, far exceeding the 15.5 mph limit
  • Under Operation Gears, Merseyside units are using on-the-spot seizure and 48-hour destruction powers and urging the public to report illegal electric bikes
