Overview

  • Opera lodged a formal complaint with Brazil’s CADE on July 29 alleging Microsoft’s default installation of Edge on Windows unfairly limits rival browsers.
  • The complaint asserts Microsoft incentivizes OEMs to preinstall Edge exclusively and employs manipulative UI tactics, or dark patterns, to steer users from alternatives.
  • Opera is requesting remedies including unbundling Edge from Windows, banning dark patterns, and prohibiting OEM S mode rebate conditions.
  • In June Opera held 6.78 percent of Brazil’s desktop browser market, trailing Edge’s 11.52 percent and Google Chrome’s 75 percent share.
  • Microsoft has not responded publicly as CADE reviews the complaint, which follows Opera’s July appeal challenging Edge’s exemption from the EU Digital Markets Act.
