OpenAI Unveils Five New U.S. Stargate Data Centers as Nvidia Pledges Up to $100 Billion

The expansion targets roughly 7 gigawatts of capacity and moves forward under financing frameworks that the companies say are still being finalized.

Overview

  • OpenAI detailed five additional U.S. sites under its Stargate program, bringing about 7 GW of planned capacity through partnerships with Oracle and SoftBank.
  • Oracle-backed sites total more than 5.5 GW across Shackelford County, Texas, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, and an undisclosed Midwest location, including a 600 MW expansion in Abilene.
  • SoftBank will co-develop sites in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas, with a combined 1.5 GW targeted in the next 18 months; OpenAI says the Ohio facility is slated to start operating next year.
  • OpenAI cited roughly $400 billion of investment for these U.S. sites to be financed with a mix of equity and debt, and executives said the new Nvidia agreement should help secure debt financing.
  • Nvidia and OpenAI announced a letter of intent for up to $100 billion to support as much as 10 GW of AI data centers using millions of GPUs, with staged funding and a reported equity component, and the first phase is expected to use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chip starting in the second half of 2026.
