OpenAI to Test Visual Ads in ChatGPT During Image Generation

The company says the pilot will fund broader access beyond subscriptions by giving advertisers labeled, image-based placements that can be measured during users' image workflows.

Overview

  • OpenAI announced on Monday that it will begin a U.S. pilot of image-based ads shown during ChatGPT's image-generation flow with tests starting in late October.
  • The ads will be clearly labeled, kept separate from users' generated images, allow users to explore or ask about products, and will not change ChatGPT's responses according to the company.
  • OpenAI added measurement integrations such as Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp and partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to run geolocation and brand-safety experiments so advertisers can evaluate causal impact.
  • Businesses can register interest now at ads.openai.com and the initial phase will use a limited set of advertisers, but OpenAI has not disclosed launch dates for other countries, pricing, or availability for markets like Mexico.
  • OpenAI frames the move as a way to expand access—citing ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly reach—but the test will be watched for effects on user trust, privacy expectations, and how brands use AI to reach people during creative or discovery moments.
