OpenAI To Shut Down ChatGPT Atlas and Fold Its Features Into ChatGPT

The company says consolidating Atlas into the desktop app with a Chrome extension will cut costs by bringing browsing and agent tools into places users already work.

Overview

  • OpenAI announced on Friday that it will discontinue the ChatGPT Atlas browser and stop Atlas from functioning on August 9, 2026.
  • Users must export bookmarks, open tabs and browsing history before the shutdown because Atlas data will not be transferred automatically to other products.
  • OpenAI will move Atlas’s agentic and browsing functions into a refreshed ChatGPT desktop app that will add multi-tab support, a password manager with autofill, enterprise authentication, a remote cloud browser for agent execution and integration of the Codex coding tool.
  • A new Chrome extension will give ChatGPT access to the current page’s context so users can ask about, summarize or act on web content directly from the browser.
  • The decision follows internal guidance to scale back side projects to save costs and focus on enterprise users, and it leaves space for rivals such as Perplexity and The Browser Company to continue developing standalone AI-native browsers.
