Overview

  • OpenAI said it has incorporated an India entity, begun local hiring, and will launch a New Delhi office later this year.
  • India is now ChatGPT’s second-largest market by users, with weekly active users up more than fourfold over the past year and a top-five developer base.
  • To localize pricing and access, OpenAI recently introduced ChatGPT Go at ₹399 per month with UPI payments, alongside enhanced Indic language support and a student-focused Study Mode.
  • Education and developer outreach will include an OpenAI Academy with MeitY, an Education Summit this month, and the company’s first India Developer Day later this year.
  • Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move as part of the IndiaAI Mission, as OpenAI faces intensifying competition from Google’s Gemini and Perplexity and legal challenges from Indian publishers that the company disputes.
