OpenAI, Sur Energy Sign Letter of Intent for $20–25 Billion, 500 MW AI Data Center in Patagonia

The effort aims to pair Patagonia's renewable resources with OpenAI demand to anchor an AI infrastructure hub.

Overview

  • The project, dubbed Stargate Argentina, was presented to President Javier Milei and is described as the first Stargate site in Latin America with capacity of up to 500 megawatts.
  • Investment is estimated at up to US$20–25 billion and would be executed through a joint venture with a leading cloud infrastructure developer, with OpenAI as the long-term offtaker of compute.
  • The sponsors plan to apply under Argentina’s RIGI incentive regime, with final site selection in Patagonia, financing tranches and regulatory approvals still pending.
  • Construction is targeted to begin in 2026, with an initial phase of roughly 100 MW expected online by late 2027 before scaling toward full capacity.
  • The facility is planned to run primarily on renewable power, with local providers such as Genneia cited, and backers say it would generate thousands of jobs and exportable compute capacity.
