Overview
- OpenAI began rolling out "ChatGPT for Teens" on Tuesday, applying the experience by default to declared or detected 13–17-year-olds and packaging study-focused tools with tighter protections.
- Key new features include an expanded study mode that guides students with questions instead of giving answers, built-in quizzes, scheduled "study hours" and more frequent safety prompts.
- Parental alerts have been widened so a linked adult can receive notifications in defined high-risk cases and OpenAI says every alert is reviewed by a human examiner before it is sent.
- The teen interface disables voice replies and instructs the model not to imply emotions, but age-detection remains limited and easily circumvented with identity verification not fully deployed in the EU.
- The rollout comes as OpenAI plans to start showing ads in European free and low-cost ChatGPT tiers on August 24 and has slowed development of its most advanced models after a recent autonomous cyberattack incident.
