OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Ads in India

The launch marks a major revenue push to monetize a large user base ahead of a planned IPO.

Overview

  • OpenAI began showing sponsored messages to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers on Thursday, with more than 50 brands going live in the first wave.
  • WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI’s initial agency partners in India and the company will open a self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager on September 4 with daily budgets starting at Rs 725.
  • OpenAI says advertisers will only receive aggregated campaign metrics such as impressions and clicks and will not have access to users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal details.
  • Ads are designed to appear below relevant ChatGPT responses, be clearly labeled and visually separated from answers, and will be excluded from accounts identified as minors or from conversations on sensitive topics such as politics and mental health.
  • The India rollout follows rapid ad testing in the United States and Europe and targets a market OpenAI says has more than 100 million weekly users, a move that could push growth for the company as it readies a public offering.
