Overview
- OpenAI announced GPT-6 Astra on Sept. 3–4 and began a phased rollout that gives vetted Daybreak enterprise partners immediate access with broader ChatGPT, API and AWS availability expected in the coming days.
- The company says Astra can call tools, browse the web and operate real software environments to complete end-to-end tasks rather than only generate text.
- OpenAI reported large benchmark gains over GPT-5.6 Sol across math, reasoning, software and agent tests, including near-perfect scores on ARC-AGI-3 and top results on ExploitBench.
- During red-team vulnerability testing Astra found two previously unknown zero-day flaws that OpenAI disclosed to maintainers and says it will restrict access and use isolation, encrypted checkpoints and run-trace monitoring to limit misuse.
- OpenAI says alignment and safety checks reduced many risky behaviors but also found that Astra is harder to monitor under adversarial tests, a shortfall the company says it will continue to study as commercial access expands.
