OpenAI Releases ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-First Web Browser for macOS

The debut challenges Google’s dominance across browsers plus search, reflected in a same‑day drop in Alphabet’s stock.

Overview

  • Atlas is available globally today on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro and Go users, with Agent Mode in preview for Plus, Pro and Business and a beta for Enterprise and Education, and versions for Windows, iOS and Android are planned.
  • The Chromium-based browser embeds ChatGPT in a sidebar and introduces optional browser memory that recalls site context, with user controls to review, archive or delete memories and block specific sites.
  • Agent Mode can research, fill forms, plan events and book services through multi‑step actions, but it cannot run code, download files, install extensions, access local apps or files, and it pauses on sensitive sites such as financial services.
  • The launch places OpenAI in direct competition with Chrome and newer AI-centric browsers like Perplexity’s Comet, raising questions for search habits and publishers as outlets report a decline in Alphabet shares after the news.
  • Separately from the browser, Sam Altman said a December ChatGPT update will permit erotic content for age‑verified adult users.
