OpenAI Reinstates GPT-4o Legacy Option, Expands GPT-5 Performance

Admitting the GPT-4o removal was an error, OpenAI is boosting reasoning limits, adding four personality modes, preparing clearer model indicators.

Overview

  • Sam Altman acknowledged that deprecating GPT-4o disrupted user workflows and has restored it as a selectable legacy model for paid subscribers.
  • ChatGPT Plus subscribers now receive higher GPT-5 reasoning rate limits, capped at 3,000 messages per week, to support more intensive use cases.
  • The GPT-5 rollout introduces four optional personality modes—Cynic, Robot, Listener and Nerd—allowing users to customize the AI’s conversational style.
  • OpenAI resolved the autoswitcher failure that briefly degraded GPT-5’s performance and will launch UI updates to display which model is responding.
  • The company is monitoring user demand and capacity usage to guide future support for both legacy models and the unified GPT-5 system.
